Hi! I ran my first game using the Blades in the Dark ruleset this past week. I overlayed it with the Fantasy world we generally play D&D-based. Our group had been wanting to move toward something else, like Fate but with some more supporting mechanics, and the BitD/FinD ruleset seemed a great middle-ground. Afterward, I stumbled upon your work, bought it, and read it end-to-end. Can't wait to use this with the Foundry VTT for our next game session!

Do you all have a Discord server or anything that is joinable for sharing stuff, asking questions/for clarifications, and getting the latest updates?

We were wanting to ask more about the amount of bonus dice that spells may bring, their impact on position, and their impact on effect. For example, if you cast a fireball (level 3), other than it affecting a group of enemies and using the hunt skill...does it only add 1 bonus die when the Wizard, without Hunt normally, rolls his fireball (giving him just 1d without other bonuses considered to use by default)? Since he isn't say, right amongst 3 bugbear (figure monster tier 2 + a +1 scale bump since there are 3) where he would otherwise be at a Limited/Desparate approach, does it instead put him at Controlled (due to range and being out of immediate retaliation)/Standard (due to damage and radius of fireball) as well

That's great to hear!

I do have a Discord I just made public that you can join at https://discord.gg/eWkxcBHSy3

Magic spells in general do not give bonus dice. Though there are feats, magic items, pushing oneself, assisting, and devils bargains can give bonus dice. (I'll be working on magic items soon to help on that front.)

Magic in general follows the fiction on what kind of bonuses, if any, one may get. For the fireball example, if the bugbears happen to be close to each other it would make sense for the fireball casted to have improved effect and if the wizard has distance from them possibly improved position. (Though if the bugbears have an amulet of fire resistance the effect may be reduced.)
Hopefully that helps some. Feel free to join the Discord to talk about the minutia and ask questions!

OMG, this game is simply & exactly what it says it is.
*& imao the exact game hack that the world of ttrpgs needs rn

Thank you very much for the kind words. <3 I'll keep working on it!

I've noticed a few mentions of a "bond clock" and "rival clock" in the rules, but haven't found any specific sheets or section on the character sheet for that intel. Am I just somehow overlooking it?

You are correct that an actual clock is missing. Currently you count the Beliefs under the Bonds section on the character sheet to determine how full each clock is. When you add the fourth belief is when you reset and thus why there is no fourth belief space. I'll put it on the list of things to clarify, or add a clock, for next release. Thanks for the question!

Thanks! I think there may be an error on the Reference Sheet as well -- the "4-5" under Controlled I *THINK* should say "You do it, but there's a CONTROLLED consequence" -- just wanted to bring that to your attention in case no one else has mentioned it yet.

Good catch! It is corrected and will be in the next release. Thanks!

Is your intent with spells that they be one-and-done, or are they like an ongoing piece of gear where once it has been marked in inventory it can be cast multiple times without marking additional inventory slots?

(3 edits)

My intent is to treat it like gear. Once it has been marked in inventory it can be cast multiple times without taking additional inventory slots.

However, if in fiction you lose your components associated with that spell you will have to mark off new inventory slots. (For example if you try to cast magic missile in a desperate position and fail you might have to junk the inventory slots associated with that spell.)

Awesome, thanks!

Also, have been abbreviating this game to FitDun, which made me imagine Fit Dungeon, a reality TV show that's Ninja Warrior in a dungeon with boffer weapon combat.

Ha! I may start using that to avoid the confusion with Forged in the Dark.

This may be exactly what I've been looking for to run heists in a D&D like setting. Have wanted to run a D&D Six of Crows style game. I've only seen the demo so far, because broke, but very excited to try this out when I can get the full game.

That's great to hear!
The demo and full game are currently exactly the same so you aren't missing out on anything!
The next big drop of content should be dropping "Soon".

Played at Gen Con and it was a ton of fun!

That's great to hear!

If you don't mind me asking, which character and time slot did you play?

Shaylen (the unicorn paladin) on Saturday at 8

Yooo! I've been thinking about the session you were in a lot. I would totally be down for playing again sometime!

Absolutely! If you are going to Pax Unplugged this winter, I would love to play again

Can I ask - what was your thinking behind using the same suite of Actions as Blades in the Dark?

(+1)

Absolutely!

The main reason currently is I need to prioritize what to work on. I want to go back and revise some more actions, beyond replacing Attune with Channel. But, I feel that my time is better spent fleshing out other systems currently.

Don't be surprised to see more actions change before V1.0. ;)
