Gen Con 2023 Report

Gen Con was a week ago and I'm still thinking about it.

I had a great time running four games for players that had never played Forged in the Dungeon before! (That's right four games not five. Turns out hosting games 9 am or earlier is a flip of the coin on if people are awake in time to play. Good to know for next time!)

I was humbled immensely when two of the players played the last game of the night Friday and showed up before anyone else for the 9 am the next morning hoping to fill no shows, which they were able to do. (Shoutout to Pimbo and Sung!)

There were a few things I was testing out this year at Gen Con, the Druid Class, the Sorcerer Class, treasure, and part of a mega dungeon.

As I mentioned before, The Wizard of Death is actually a mega dungeon that I'll be running in full at Gamehole Con. At Gen Con I ran two of the four sections with mixed success. I feel like one section wasn't large enough but had the right balance of discoverability and variety. While the other section was sized correctly but finding the treasure was way too hard.  Both issues are going to require some tweaking of the dungeon but shouldn't be too bad to fix.

The sorcerer was played at least 2 out of the 4 times and performed well. However, I'm going to try another combination of feats at Gamehole Con before I feel comfortable releasing it into the wild.

The druid was played at least 2 out of the 4 times and was excellent. Everything fired on all cylinders for what a druid should be able to do and the shenanigans that can ensue. The classic scenario of what if a druid shapeshifted from up high and landed on something even happened. I'll hopefully be working with Amber Seger to get the druid on a proper character sheet and released soon.

Before Gen Con I had a list of about 30 treasure items I would have players draw from when they found treasure when running one shots. For this year I expanded that list to 100 treasure items. The variety of items made the games much less predictable and exciting from a GM perspective. The players also seemed to enjoy drawing from the large stack of paper strips when getting treasure and then reading outload what they found. Overall it produced fantastic results and confirmed that treasure is an important and exciting part of Forged in the Dungeon.

For those that have purchased Forged in the Dungeon I have released the treasure list I used at Gen Con for you to check out, use, and be inspired by for your own games. I will point out that not all items are created equal and may mess up a campaign compared to a one shot. However, I tried pulling a few different levers when making the list and there are few items I will be digging into in the future for what treasure could be in Forged in the Dungeon.

That's all I have for now. If you have any questions feel free to comment or DM me on any social @EvilDMJosh.

Have Fun!
