Big Update & Gamehole Con Play Report

Hello All,

A few months ago I had the wonderful experience of running Forged in the Dungeon at Gamehole Con! While there I ran my mega dungeon The Wizard of Death across four adventures each run consisting of different players. In addition I ran my adventure The Ashen Ankh twice and ran my demo adventure Blythegate Mountain once. It was a lot of gaming and I was exhausted at the end of it all but it was a blast to share Forged in the Dungeon with people that had never played it before!

I had never designed or ran a mega dungeon before, it turned out to be more work than I expected throughout the process. However, it was extremely exciting to figure out and see what the heck was going to happen in the next run based on what the guild of the day had done. At the end of every run the guild got to leave behind one magic item per person, in addition they were also able to leave behind a clue made up of one word from each guildmate. It was extremely entertaining to see the next day's guild try to figure out what the growing list of clues ment and try to leverage them. There were truly shocking developments that happened every game session that I want to gush about. However, I don't want to spoil the adventure for future players that may be reading this. Needless to say, having a structured dungeon react and change based on the fiction established over multiple play sessions was extremely fun to see play out and proves to me that Forged in the Dungeon can achieve what many expect from high fantasy games but with a fiction first mindset.

The Ashen Ankh is my go to full adventure to run for people to try out Forged in the Dungeon and both runs at GHC were awesome. The players were great and everyone at the table had a great time. During one of runs Forged in the Dungeon got some of the highest praise I had ever heard along the lines of "this is fucking epic" while we were all watching in bated breath to see what the rolls and results were while taking on the final boss encounter.

My last game at GHC was Blythegate Mountain which ran in the last two of the convention. Only two players showed up given the circumstances. However, both were experienced in RPG's and we all had a blast playing. The two players really leaned into the bonds and beliefs they had established and took the challenges head on.

From a design perspective Forged in the Dungeon performed very well. There were a handful of small issues discovered through play that I'll need to address, but nothing major. The Druid was played a few more times and confirmed to me that it is good enough for everyone to give it a go. As such you can check out the character right now in the new release available right now!

Big Update

Speaking of releases the next major update of Forged in the Dungeon is available right now! As mentioned, the Druid is now available to play. A fair amount of the general rules have been updated to be similar to the rules listed from the Blades in the Dark SRD. Almost all the classes have had feats changed in one way or another to be more in theme with what I expect from each high fantasy class.

As for new content I added a new assessor for effect known as standing with four levels, commoner, adventurer, demigod, and god. Player characters are adventurer by default. I'm a big fan of adventurers being these capable beings that can help the common folk but that also demigods and gods walk amongst them as well and are not to be trifled with. This paradigm can now be mechanically represented with standing.

I also added a new system called Death to deal with, well death. My experience with TTRPG's has always been that death is another opportunity to develop one's character and add to their overall story. The system allows a player to continue playing their character after death with a twist if so desired.

Finally I consolidated all the rules into one main document and all the sheets into one document for easy perusal, added a player best practice section, and added starting belief examples for all classes.

Going forward I'll be releasing new content in a less edited format to help get content out at a faster rate so that everyone can play it and see how it does.

Hope you all enjoy the new content!

Have Fun!

Josh
